Trinity Announces New Director of Music

Trinity College is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Christopher Watson as Director of Music.

Mr Watson, at present the Director of Music at St Edmund Hall in the University of Oxford, will commence in January 2017.  An internationally acclaimed tenor and choir conductor, he has more than twenty-five years of experience in church music. His distinguished career includes several years as a Lay Clerk in Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford, and Westminster Cathedral Choir, London, and he is a longstanding member of The Tallis Scholars and Theatre of Voices, with whom he won a Grammy Award in 2010. With composer John Duggan he established the chamber choir Sospiri in 2006. To date Sospiri has produced eight CDs, to critical acclaim.

Mr Watson has established a world-wide network of eminent musicians and has organised and led many international choir tours, including for St Edmund Hall and Sospiri. He is delighted to have the opportunity to join Trinity College and the music community of Melbourne, and welcomes the challenge of leading the famous Choir of Trinity College and inspiring and organising more performances of fine music in all parts of the College.

The College is also pleased to announce that Mr Sam Allchurch, alumnus of Trinity and the Trinity Choir, has been appointed to conduct the Choir in semester two, 2016.  Mr Allchurch holds an Honours degree in Music from Melbourne, and a Masters in Music (Choral Studies) from Cambridge, where he held a prestigious Gates Scholarship.  For the next few months he will divide his time between Trinity and his role with Gondwana Choirs in Sydney.  The Trinity Choir is already singing splendidly under his teaching and direction.
