Meet FS teacher John Murphy

By Emily McAuliffe

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Deputy Subject Leader John Murphy shares a funny story from the classroom and tells of the time he went head-to-head with the Harlem Globetrotters.

John MurphyWhat class do you teach?

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in the February Standard program.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at Trinity College?

Working with committed and competent people.

What is one of your favourite memories from a Trinity class?

After comparing the students’ social media use to the technology available to me when I was at their stage of education (in 1989), one student asked me, “So, are you, like, from the olden days?”

What was your favourite subject at school?

Maths and physics. I loved the logic of them.

What is your favourite thing about Australia?

The opportunities for anyone to play a wide range of sports, regardless of skill and experience.

What’s an interesting story from your life or travels you’d like to share?

A friend and I were once successful in winning a game against two of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team (ok, it was a game of pool, but a win’s a win!).
