Residential student Tyson Holloway Clarke (2nd year Arts) is taking part in ‘Outback to Icecap’, the world’s first Indigenous expedition in Antarctica.
Tyson and seven other young Australians selected for the 16-day expedition are currently spending time in Argentina before crossing the southern ocean to reach Antarctica’s Trinity Peninsula on Christmas Eve.
This once in a lifetime journey has been designed to challenge, empower and develop the leadership skills of the students, who have been undertaking physical, mental and emotional training throughout the year.
Accompanying the students are Australian adventurer Peter Bland, the first Australian to walk both the North and South poles; and Waverley Stanley, mentor and Founder of Yalari, not-for-profit indigenous education organisation that is funding the expedition.
Stepping out of their comfort zones and onto the ice, the group will endeavor the grueling challenge of climbing an Antarctic mountain peak. The students will also be ice climbing, snowshoeing, kayaking and camping overnight on the mainland.
Tyson will arrive back in Australia on 3 January.
