More than 100 people gathered from many parts of Australia and New Zealand for the inaugural Anglican Summer School held by the Trinity College Theological School from 3 to 6 February.
Clergy and lay people came from Canberra, Newcastle, Bendigo, Wangaratta, Gippsland, Gold Coast, Auckland, Christchurch and from suburbs across Melbourne to hear a range of speakers focus on the theme ‘The Place of Theology in Ministry’.
The program included morning and evening prayer, and a midday Eucharist celebrated each day in the college chapel.
The keynote speaker was the acclaimed American theologian, Professor Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at the Duke University Divinity School in North Carolina. Professor Hauerwas offered two challenging addresses to the Summer School, as well as a public lecture at St Peter’s Church, Eastern Hill.
Professor Hauerwas’s academic interests range across systematic theology, philosophical theology and ethics, political theory, the philosophy of social science, and medical ethics. He was named ‘America’s Best Theologian’ by Time magazine in 2001.
Other speakers included the Warden, the Revd Professor Andrew McGowan; the dean of the Theological School, the Revd Professor Dorothy Lee; Canon Dr Ray Cleary; Professor Peter Sherlock; and Dr Felicity Harley-McGowan.
