About the artists
Directed by English tenor Christopher Watson, a third-generation singer and former member of the Tallis Scholars, the internationally acclaimed Choir of Trinity College is one of the few choirs in Australia modelled on the iconic Oxford and Cambridge chapel choirs. The Choir has been singing the services at the college chapel for more than 40 years. Beyond the college, the young singers’ love of singing is frequently on display in concerts of great secular and sacred choral music for listeners in Australia and overseas.
About this concert
Arvo Pärt and Ross Edwards are two of the most significant composers of our time. They have fundamentally changed the way choral music is written, returning to a more melodic and joyous style. Pärt’s Berlin Mass is a sublime example of his meditative style, evoking ancient chant and sonorous bells. In his Mass of the Dreaming, Edwards, one of Australia’s most recognised composers, shows his deep connection to the land as he engages with the rhythms of Indigenous chant and the sounds of native birds and insects. Through the Tallis Scholars and Paul Hillier’s Theatre of Voices, Trinity’s Director of Music, Christopher Watson, has worked extensively with Arvo Pärt, and Trinity’s recording of Edwards’s Mass was Limelight magazine’s Disc of the Month in October 2019. This is a rare opportunity to hear one of Australia’s finest young choirs perform these two modern masterpieces.
