Trinity student awarded McKinsey & Co Women in Leadership Scholarship

Susie Gomm (2nd year Commerce) was recently awarded the 2013 McKinsey & Company Women in Leadership Scholarship.

The award includes a $15,000 scholarship to further personal and professional development and an eight-week internship in the company’s Melbourne office in January 2014.

The application process involved a number of interview rounds in both Melbourne and Sydney, where applicants were tasked with rigorous problem solving tests and impromptu hypothetical consulting challenges.

‘I am really looking forward to the internship and the opportunity to work within a consulting team on a real project,' Susie said.

'Studying engineering through my university breadth track, I love the problem solving process and developing novel solutions.

‘Growing up in the Philippines I saw real poverty, pollution and political instability, I think this experience has given me an innate social conscience. I definitely want to combine these two passions in my future; consulting seems like the perfect platform to develop the skills, network and opportunities necessary to help benefit real people and businesses.’

During the internship, Susie will receive mentor support to help develop her leadership profile, skills and career orientation.

'The underlying skill I believe all leaders need is the ability to communicate effectively, listen and understand a diverse range of people and their perspectives in this global society.

‘I think this application process really taught me how important it is to be proud and take ownership of your achievements and that in doing so, you allow others to be proud, too. In that sense, I think we are really lucky to be at a College like Trinity where everyone is encouraged to excel in their own way – I think it's important to bring that with you out of College to bust the tall poppy syndrome.’
