St Matthew Passion brought to life for Holy Week

Trinity College Choir joined the Consort of Melbourne, Ensemble Gombert, and period instrumental ensemble, Ironwood, to perform JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion on Sunday 17 April to a full house at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

Distinguished choral conductor Jeremy Summerly led an outstanding cast of soloists including Trinity postgraduate student Siobhan Stagg, and Director of Music at Trinity College, Melbourne, Mr Michael Leighton Jones, who sang the part of Christus.

Trinity College Chaplain and Bach scholar, the Revd Dr Andreas Loewe, presented a pre-concert lecture, and said the Easter performance was an ideal opportunity to reflect together on the life of Christ and hear the story through a magnificent piece of music.

‘It’s fascinating to look at how Bach brings the story of the Passion to life through music in the form of chorales, arias, hymns and poetry and I was delighted to be able to share that with others,’ Andreas said.

‘It gave the audience the chance to really own the story and reflect on how it impacts them in their lives today.’

The lecture and concert have been recorded for broadcast by ABC Classic FM.

The Trinity College Choir will perform in the Chapel this Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7.30pm.
