How to make the most of your 2020

What does your plan look like for 2020? Have you set any goals to make the most of this academic year?

Jeremy Ho is a Foundation Studies alumnus and a current Trinity resident, who is in his second year studying commerce. The Careers and Alumni team caught up with him in early February to learn about his ‘grand plan’.

Over the summer, Jeremy kick-started his plan by taking on an internship in a legal firm in Melbourne, applying what he has learnt from his course work and previous work experience, assessing the firm’s workflow and helping them tighten their internal processes.

Following this experience, he took on a second year subject, International Business Experience, over the summer semester in India (a subject that is highly recommended by Jeremy!). It was a great experience for him and 20 other students. Received by Shri Ram College of Commerce and companies including Pero, TERI, NASSCOM, Power Finance Corporation, EY Delhi, Eko and the Australian High Commission, they learnt about business practises in India, how a country’s culture helps shape the way they do business, and red tape and obstacles that surround Indian businesses. While undertaking this subject, the group also took the chance to enjoy a number of cultural activities including yoga, Bollywood dancing and visiting the Taj Mahal.

By completing this summer subject, Jeremy will only be taking three subjects this coming semester, which affords him time to take on some extra-curricular activities and seek further work experience.

In his first year, Jeremy took up an internship role at Riverlane Capital, a company co-founded by Trinity alumnus, Johnson Wang (TC 2006), and his business partner Sahil Shekhar. Riverlane Capital focusses on acquiring and actively managing small businesses in niche sectors in Australia. At this newly founded company, Jeremy was taught how to source and evaluate potential acquisition targets and to conduct commercial and financial due diligence. It was such a valuable experience that he is planning to continue his internship at Riverlane Capital for an additional year.

On top of study and internship commitments, Jeremy will also be participating in the 2020 Global Victoria intellect Program, organised by Global Victoria and the University of Melbourne, to gain some experience in consulting. Through this program, students will act as consultants to conduct research for small and emerging Victorian businesses to help expand their businesses internationally. To gain more exposure in consulting, Jeremy is also planning to join Impertus, a consulting group, to work on a voluntary basis. This groups aims to help socially conscious organisations to develop practical and sustainable solutions to the challenges that they are facing.

Other than working towards reaching his dream career, Jeremy also knows the importance of looking after his wellbeing – he is planning to spend some time with a Krump group to practise his dance moves.
