Cast members from the 1955 Trinity College play, Hassan, were invited back to the College on Friday 15 April as two pieces of original Philip Sargeant artwork were presented to the Trinity College art collection.
Mary Newsome, artist and friend of the late Sargeant, offered the two paintings of Melbourne cityscapes from Philip’s Estate to Trinity’s Warden, Associate Professor Andrew McGowan.
Philip Sargeant (TC 1952) was an established Australian architect, but also an acclaimed actor, painter and poet. Further, he designed the costumes for the 1955 Trinity play as well as sets and costumes for countless other performances. Sargeant died of cancer in 2008.
Attendees were delighted to view Sargeant’s original costume drawings and fabric swatches on display, along with original programs and cast lists that were also presented to the Trinity Archive collection.
Resident students Astrid Fulton (3rd year Science) and Santo Tripodi (1st year Science) also performed a scene from this year’s College play, Glengarry Glen Ross, which begins on Thursday 12 May.
Trinity’s Warden, Associate Professor Andrew McGowan, said the afternoon was an extraordinary event and it was wonderful to welcome back cast members and accept the artwork.
‘A period of Trinity College’s history has opened up again and we’re delighted to be able to add pieces of Philip’s artwork to our collection,’ he said.
