It's NAIDOC Week

By Emily McAuliffe

Annual NAIDOC Week events celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and this year's theme, Always Was, Always Will Be, recognises Australia's First Nations peoples as the original custodians of our land.

NAIDOC

This week is NAIDOC Week. The theme for NAIDOC Week 2020, Always Was, Always Will Be, recognises that First Nations peoples have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. It celebrates the ongoing spiritual and cultural connection to this country, criss-crossed by generations of brilliant nations.

NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country – a history that dates back thousands of generations – and the oldest continuing cultures on the planet, and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded.

Like most events in 2020, NAIDOC Week is a little different and a little later this year. It is usually held in July to acknowledge and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements. NAIDOC Week will run through until next Sunday.

Check out the NAIDOC Week official website for events. The University of Melbourne is also hosting a number of events throughout the week, including a launch event on 12 November for the new Agreements, Treaties and Negotiated Settlements (ATNS) website, and more
