FS student fundraiser

Psychology students from the Foundation Studies Program recently raised money for Oxfam and donated clothes to the Australian Red Cross.

On 11 May, in and around the Evan Burge building, the FS students set up stalls for an afternoon of music, culinary delights and pie-throwing mayhem.

Dr Maureen Vincent, TCFS Psychology Subject Leader, initiated interest in the idea to engage in social justice and positive psychology within the Psychology curriculum. Ian Teo, Lecturer in Psychology, was instrumental in getting the project off the ground, and organised the entire event over a period of a few months.

Students in the August Main program were asked whether they would like to volunteer their time and raise funds for a charity of their choice. The response from the students was very positive, and all students worked hard to deliver on all aspects of the event.

On the day, the events included a student band performance, bake-off and friendship band sale, clothes donation and sale, and a pie-throwing contest (see pictures).

All in the spirit of fun and good-will, pies were thrown at FS staff members from Maths, History Of Ideas, Literature, Psychology, and Physics.

The students raised a total of $734.40 for Oxfam, and all unsold clothes were donated to the Australian Red Cross.

Following the success of the day, Psychology staff plan to make this an annual event and invite FS students from all intakes to participate in fundraising events to help marginalised and disadvantaged communities.
