Strategies for Pastoral Care (Diploma)

Students will be introduced to pastoral care theory and its application. Attention will be given to the different settings of care, and to a range of pastoral issues which may arise within different contexts. Students will develop effective caring skills and begin to develop an understanding of their own pastoral identity, as well as how to sustain healthy pastoral practices, grounded in a biblical and theological approach to pastoral care.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this unit, it is expected that students will be able to:

  • outline key elements of pastoral care from a biblical and theological perspective
  • apply pastoral helping skills in particular contexts
  • reflect upon their pastoral practice using verbatims and case studies
  • describe important issues which might arise in the practice of pastoral ministry and develop initial responses from a biblical and/or theological perspective. 
  • 750-word reflective verbatim (20%)
  • 1,000-word case study (35%)
  • 1,500-word essay (45%)
