Women’s Netball Go Back-to-Back

In 2015, after 23 long years without a finals appearance, the first’s netball team won what is believed to be the inaugural title in the history of Trinity College. Now, they have gone back-to-back with victory in this year’s competition.

After finishing fourth in the regular season, the women pulled off a huge upset against Newman College in the semi-finals, before beating staunch rivals St Hilda’s College by 35-25 goals in the final.

The victory against St Hilda’s, the same team Trinity defeated in last year’s final, secured the first ever back-to-back titles for the College in the netball.

The girls jumped out to an early lead, but then had to fight hard to hold on to the lead for the rest of the game. In the third quarter, St Hilda's got within 3 goals, but the team steadied to push the lead back out and ran over the top of their opponents at the end of the match.

Captain Bronte Douglas-Scarfe highlighted a few key players in the victory, ‘Xenia Brookes played very well. She hadn't played any of the games throughout the season due to injury, but came in to play the semi-final and final. She is an outstanding goal shooter as evidenced in our final score! Kate Clark also played great, working very hard in defence.’

The game like last year’s final was the same night as TCAC dinner, with a large crowd coming to support the team, dressed up in cocktail attire. The Trinity crowd created a great atmosphere, cheering on the players from the stands.

Special thanks to Scott Charles (TC 1986) for his passionate and vocal support of the team throughout the season.

Will next season be another three-peat like the men’s football team achieved this season? Only time will tell.
