Trinity women’s footy soars to victory; men’s footy gallant in defeat

The women’s footy team has claimed victory in the grand finals, impressively going "back to back to back", crushing Ormond 36-0. Unfortunately, the men’s team came up just short, narrowly losing by 7 points in a closely fought grand final. Sports representatives, Lilli Vagnarelli and Alex Gall share their insights from the respective women’s and men’s matches.

By Lilli Vagnarelli:

With the Trinity Women’s AFL team defeating Ormond in the previous two premierships, the girls were eager to make it a back to back to back winning streak (or as they liked to call it, a ‘3 peat’). While Ormond put up a good fight, the dedication and experience in the Trinity team helped us secure our third premiership, with a final score of 36-0.  Special mention must go to Bella Nichols who was the leading goal scorer, managing to kick 4 goals in the grand final. Of course, these goals were accompanied by her signature one-handed marks.

Phoebe Ulrick, Tarryn Love, Aleshia Scanlon and Millie Klingbeil dominated through the midfield, in what would be the greatest midfield this competition has ever seen. And of course, the ruthless backline who succeeded in keeping Ormond scoreless. The most consistent strength, commented on heavily by the spectators, was how hard the Trinity team laid tackles. This is a real testament to the Trinity team’s hunger for the ball, their determination to win and their love for a female sport where contact is legal. A massive thank you to all those who supported and helped make Trinity Women’s Aussie Rules the great success it is. With an exceptionally strong group of freshers this year we know the team is in safe hands for next year.

By Alex Gall:

The 2018 men’s football grand final between Trinity and Ormond was set up to be a fiercely contested game, reflecting the hard work and determination shown by both teams throughout the season. The men’s firsts were buoyed by the women’s crushing victory and approached their game with an intense desire to win. Fortitude shown from the defenders and a crosswind meant that marking contests Inside 50 were messy and shots on goal were inaccurate. The discipline shown by the Trinity team was honourable with Ormond receiving a yellow card and committing upwards of 20 high tackles during the game.

Oscar Dowd kicked Trinity’s first two goals and looked very dangerous all game. The ruthlessness from midfielders James Wiffen and Will Foster spread throughout the team as we headed into three-quarter time in the lead. A gallant last term ultimately wasn’t enough, with Ormond sealing victory by 7 points. Special mention must go to the third-year veteran Matthew Blair and first-year Josh Murray, both playing half-back, because not only did they take numerous contested marks and dominated their direct opponents, but they used the ball efficiently, almost carrying us to victory. Let’s hope this fuels the hunger for next year’s football team. From all the players, thank you to all our supporters throughout the season, we will bring it home next season!
