Trinity partners in leadership

The College is working to support leadership development for parliamentarians.

Trinity, in partnership with the Australian Futures Project (AFP) has announced Australia's first ever Leadership Program for Parliamentarians.

The job of a modern parliamentarian is more complex, pressured and difficult than ever before. At the same time, the world is becoming increasingly interconnected and unpredictable. Old approaches are often no longer appropriate.

The Australian Futures Project, La Trobe University and Trinity College are creating a prestigious, selective and highly practical leadership program for parliamentarians. It responds to requests by politicians. It has been designed with input from politicians, the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal Party of Australia.

While their job is crucial to the future of all Australians, unlike other professions, politicians receive very little ongoing professional development. This new leadership program has been designed exclusively for parliamentarians to bridge that gap. It is about equipping them to govern well, not about what to believe or how to get elected.

This innovative program draws on international best practice. The curriculum for this multi-party program combines case studies, guest speakers and small group interaction to provide a stimulating and intellectually challenging experience.

The program is guided by the following Steering Committee:

  • Mary Easson – former ALP MP
  • Michael Lee – former ALP Communications Minister
  • Terry Moran – former Secretary, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet
  • Brendan Nelson – former Liberal Defence Minister and Leader of the Opposition
  • Kay Patterson – former Liberal Minister for Health and Ageing, Minister for Family and Community Services, and Minister Assisting the PM for Women’s Issues
  • Elizabeth Proust – former Secretary, Victorian Department of the Premier and Cabinet.
