Trinity College vs St Hilda’s COVID Cup

In a COVID world, all-important community sport and competition has sadly been reduced, so the College has been forced to adapt and think creatively to provide opportunities for students to flex their competitive muscles.

In Semester 2, arrangements were made with St Hilda’s College to form a COVID-safe sports competition. Trinity’s TCAC Sports Reps, Emma Boyd-Law and Lachie Randello, worked with their St Hilda’s counterparts to form a calendar of events for students to get active and get involved.

The COVID Cup began with a campus running relay, with Trinity taking out the first event by a narrow margin. Then came a virtual rowing event where rowing machines on the tennis courts replaced boats on the river – St Hilda’s took out this event.

Since then, there have been competitions held online between the two colleges – chess, debating, and more. Once restrictions were lifted and sports became possible once more, the colleges competed in a 5 v 5 soccer tournament and are planning tennis and volleyball competitions during the final weeks of semester.

Currently (and unsurprisingly!), Trinity is leading the cup seven events to four. Congratulations to all competitors and to those who helped organise the initiative. It’s testament to how rewarding it is to plan creative events that come well within current COVID safety measures. This event will no doubt be an important part of the Trinity College calendar for years to come.
