Science Stream
The Science stream is designed to provide a broad introduction to a range of sciences, while presenting students with the issues and possibilities faced by researchers and professionals. The breadth of subject matter highlights the interconnections between various scientific fields.
Leading University academics and experts from industry deliver an inspiring program of lectures, laboratory sessions and workshops that aims to challenge students to engage with the practical face of science, and debate the ways in which science can affect and contribute to the world at large.
All Science students take on an individual research and presentation project, and participate in hands-on practicals and group discussions.
Lectures and class-based activities are augmented with field trips and students are encouraged to develop the self-motivation and sense of enquiry that are required for success at university.
Program
The program is dynamic, but each features:
- Lectures by leading University academics and invited experts
- Workshops and small-group demonstrations
- Field trips
- Laboratory work
- Discussion groups
- Student research projects
The core areas covered during the Summer School are biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, but in fact lectures, workshops and demonstrations have covered more 'real world' applications of science:
botany, conservation, optometry, cosmology, biomechanics, genetics, cryptology, sports science, oenology, ethics, psychology, research skills, history and philosophy of science, medical science and bioengineering, zoology … and much more.
