Travel to Melbourne
Passports and Visas
Students travelling from overseas should
ensure that their passports are valid for the entire period they will be in Australia.
A visitor visa is normally required, and should be valid for the entire Summer School program. It is important that these documents be correct, as attending
to these while in Australia will require time and effort.
Please contact the Director of Summer Schools if you encounter difficulties in obtaining these documents. To locate your closest Australian mission, please visit www.dfat.gov.au/missions.
Booking your Flights
It is important to book flights into and
out of Melbourne well in advance.
Summer Schools are held in July and December - both times when domestic and international flights are heavily booked. The choice of suitable flight times will be limited if bookings are not made as early as possible.
Please contact the Director of Summer Schools if you experience problems with booking flights into or out of Melbourne.
Immigration and Customs Regulations
Passengers on flights into Australia will be given an Incoming Passenger Card that includes a Customs Declaration. Customs regulations are strict, and you must declare if you are carrying any goods or items listed on the form, including food, plant material or animal products.
If you are unsure about what you can or cannot bring into Australia, you are encouraged to contact your nearest Australian mission, or visit www.customs.gov.au.
While there is no requirement to do so, some students may wish to bring laptop computers. According to the Customs Service, students may bring laptops and similar electronic equipment duty-free into Australia provided Customs is satisfied these will be taken with them on departure.
Airline Baggage Allowances
Depending on your airline and fare type,
the check-in luggage allowance is typically up to 20kg, and cabin luggage up to
7kg. Please check with your airline regarding baggage allowances.
You should also note your airline's cabin restrictions (what is and what is not allowed on board).
