About the Dean
When the Revd Dr Timothy Gaden was appointed Dean of the Theological School in July 2007, he needed no introduction to Trinity College.
After graduating from the University of Melbourne with honours in Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse, Dr Gaden began his theological studies at Trinity, taking out a Bachelor of Divinity with First Class Honours, majoring in Ethics, from the Melbourne College of Divinity. He subsequently completed a PhD at Monash University on Philosophy and Ethics in early Christianity, before leaving for the UK to take up a post-doctoral appointment at King’s College, London.
Dr Gaden's interests in theological education are extremely broad. As well as having taught within the United Faculty of Theology and in London, he has held appointments as the Director of Christian Formation at the General Board of Religious Education, where he also trained ‘Education for Ministry’ mentors, and as Australian editor of the Ashes to Fire resource for parish small group study. He has developed and taught courses in Ethics and Church History from Diploma to Master’s level.
Dr Gaden also brings wide and diverse parish experience to this role. He was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1991 and served curacies at St Stephen’s Mt Waverley and St George’s Malvern. During five years as the Vicar of Battersea in London, he was the patron of five neighbouring parishes and also held appointments as Director of Post-Ordination Training for the Kingston Episcopal Region, and Lecturer in the Bishop of Southwark’s Certificate in Theology. He is a former Incumbent of St John’s Camberwell.
In taking up his current role, Timothy has followed in his father’s footsteps – the Revd Dr John Gaden served as Director of the Theological School, Chaplain to the Canterbury Fellowship and Theologian to the Archbishop of Melbourne from 1975 to 1985. John Gaden was also Stewart Lecturer in Theology, a position to which Tim Gaden was appointed earlier in 2007 and which he retains.
