Bequests
From little things, big things grow ...
Making a will is about ensuring that the people and causes you hold dear are treated the way you would wish after your death. Besides family and friends, it is appropriate to remember those institutions and activities which have been important to you.
A bequest is the key to ensuring that what you have valued will continue to grow in the new century.
Through her will, Miss Valentine Leeper made possible the commissioning of the new Chapel Organ; Mr Walter Beaumont's bequest helped in the construction of the Woodheap building. Others have provided scholarships and visiting fellowships.
Consider a bequest to Trinity College in your will.
Making a Bequest
A bequest is a gift contained within a will which allots part of a deceased person's estate to a particular beneficiary - a person or an organisation. This can be cash, shares or bonds, property or a percentage of an estate.
A gift to an organisation may be unrestricted or designated. An unrestricted bequest to Trinity College allows the College to choose how the Bequest will be applied. A designated bequest enables you to choose how your bequest will be applied. If you wish to designate a particular purpose, eg endowing a position or a scholarship, giving to the Theological School or to Music, it is essential that you consult the College to ensure that your wishes can be implemented. Circumstances may change, making the bequest difficult to administer. The most effective bequest is one that allows the College the flexibility to use your gift in a way that meets the College's needs at the time.
To ensure that your will fulfils your intentions, it is advisable that it be drawn by a solicitor or a Trustee Company. This will ensure the wording used is appropriate for the bequest you wish to make and for your particular situation. Once you have made your will, it is important to review it every few years or as circumstances change. Remember that the value of your assets will change over time.
Membership of the Leeper Society is open to anyone who has made a Bequest to the College.
