Chemistry Bridging Course
The Chemistry Bridging course has been designed for students entering the University of Melbourne Master of Arts (Cultural Material Conservation) degree but who have a very scant knowledge of chemistry, or who need to revise their previous studies. The intensive four-week program of teaching includes tutorials, demonstrations, and extensive laboratory sessions, using examples and practical applications relevant to the practice of conservation.
Analysis of materials, planning of a conservation strategy and ongoing conservation of materials requires a strong working knowledge of underlying chemical processes and fluency in the language and terminology of chemistry.
This course provides:
- an introduction to the fundamental concepts of atomic structure and bonding
- an understanding of the gross behavioural differences of the elements of the Periodic Table
- familiarity with the spontaneous chemical processes occurring in nature and an overview of the principles that govern their progress, i.e. thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium
- four full days of laboratory work, providing exposure to techniques, instrumentation and practical exercises specific to conservation practices.
Participants are entitled to use the Trinity College Library, and the
highly qualified staff are available for individual student
consultation throughout the course.
