James Cheong enrolled in Trinity College in 1891 and held the prestigious Perry Scholarship. He was a distinguished scholar of the University of Melbourne. He went on to teach at Queen's School, Hong Kong from 1899-1900, and in 1903 was a theology student at Cuddesdon Theological College, Oxford. He was ordained in 1906 in Melbourne and was a much loved priest at St Peters, Eastern Hill until he died in 1941.
A warm and compassionate man, he touched many people in Australia "who would be ever grateful to James for the spiritual help and fresh vision" that he brought to all that he did.
