College Leadership
2007 saw substantial change in the College’s Senior Management Team, which comprises the Warden and the heads of each of the major divisions of the College. A change in naming convention was also adopted during the year, with the heads of each educational section becoming ‘Deans’, rather than ‘Directors’, in line with general academic practice.
Leadership changes included:
The Seventh Warden
The Revd Dr Andrew McGowan began his term of office as Warden and President of Trinity College on Monday 29 January, marking the occasion with a breakfast for all staff.
He was officially installed as the College’s seventh Warden during a Choral Evensong service in a packed Chapel on Sunday 4 March. His Rite of Installation was based on that used for the preceding three Wardens, and included a blessing by the Archbishop of Melbourne, the Most Revd Dr Philip Freier.
In August, Dr McGowan was appointed a Principal Research Fellow in the School of Historical Studies at the University of Melbourne, an honorary appointment equivalent to, and carrying the title of, Associate Professor.
Dean of the College
After two years as the energetic head of the residential community, Dr Peter Tregear advised that he would step down in January 2008 to concentrate on his academic research and teaching.
Following a search process led by the Nominations Committee of the Board, Chairman Mr Bill Cowan announced in November that Mr Campbell Bairstow – who previously served with distinction as Acting Dean of Trinity in 2005 and was Associate Director of Development at the College from January 2003 until September 2006 – would return in 2008 as Dean and Deputy Warden. At the time of his appointment he was General Manager, Alumni Relations at the University of Melbourne.
Dean of Theology
The Revd Dr Timothy Gaden was appointed Dean of the Trinity College Theological School in July. Previously Stewart Lecturer in Theology, and Executive Officer to the Warden, he succeeded the Revd Dr Andrew McGowan who, after becoming Warden, continued as Director of the Theological School pending the appointment of the new Dean.
Dr Gaden was also appointed College Chaplain, following the departure of the Revd Dr Richard Treloar, who became Vicar of Christ Church, South Yarra, in May. Dr Gaden was formally installed in both roles by Archbishop Philip Freier on 7 October. Dean of International Programs
To provide consistency across the College, Dr Barbara Cargill’s title was changed from Head, to Dean, of International Programs. This includes her role as the Director of Trinity College Foundation Studies, a title still required in some legal circumstances.
Director of Advancement
After 10 extraordinarily successful years of fundraising leadership at Trinity, the Director of Development and Executive Officer of the Trinity College Foundation, Ms Clare Pullar, left the College in April to accept appointment as Director of Advancement at the Melbourne Business School.
She was succeeded early in second semester by Dr Alan Watkinson, previously Director of Development at Scotch College since 2002, and prior to that, Head of English at the same school since 1985. Concurrent with his commencement at Trinity, the Development Office became the Advancement Office and Alan became Director of Advancement.
Director of Human Resources
The Director of Human Resources, Ms Amanda Crawley resigned in July to take up a position with the Australian Red Cross from 1 August. She had been a staff member of the College since 1995, and before that, a resident student. Following her departure a review of this postition will lead to some restructuring in 2008
