Introduction by the Warden
In 2007 the University of Melbourne has begun inviting its community to ‘dream large’
as it continues the changes involved in cementing its place as one of the world’s leading universities.
In 2006 Trinity College was anticipating that dream, as it has done for many years. Through a variety of programs for students of the University, as well as for students of the Trinity College Theological School, of Trinity College Foundation Studies, and for those who participated in Summer Schools and other activities, the College has sought to embody an educational tradition that values community life, development of the whole person, and exchange of knowledge and ideas across disciplines.
This report reflects the year 2006 in the life of the College in slightly different terms from earlier versions; the diversity as well as the excellence of Trinity’s life is reported with the use of a greater number of ‘voices’ from the varied programs and departments.
The highlights and the details of 2006 are contained herein and I will not try to anticipate them. In the past year, as in the current one, the challenge and promise of the ‘Growing Esteem’ process is a key reference point. In coming years the makeup of the Trinity student body, across all its programs, will change in ways that will reflect developments in the University as a whole.
It is impossible to ignore the fact that 2006 also saw the departure of Don Markwell, the sixth Warden. Don’s term extended into early 2007 but he was formally farewelled late in 2006. The many accomplishments of his term will be evident to those who know the College well – Don’s vision and energy have enabled the College to take its historic mission to new levels of achievement, and we hope to extend that tradition in 2007 and beyond.
