The Big Dig has begun!
Friday 6 March
The fence was erected last Monday and the excavator arrived on Tuesday. Now there’s a very large hole in the middle of the Bulpadock – the open grassed area in the centre of the Trinity campus that is the hub of our students’ recreational activities.
The hole will grow even bigger next week as excavations continue.
Once at the correct depth, six concrete tanks with a total capacity of 800,000 litres will be constructed in the hole and rainwater from the surrounding buildings directed into them. The tanks will then be buried, an irrigation system installed and drought-resistant turf laid over the surface.
Installation of the tanks should be completed by 30 April but the whole area will remain fenced off until the turf is fully established – probably about the end of July.
Trinity College apologises for the temporary inconvenience and loss of amenity for students, staff and visitors caused by this work.
However, this short-term inconvenience will be more than offset by the long-term benefits of harvesting rainwater that is currently wasted.
It’s all part of ensuring the grass is greener – and keeping it that way.
This is a Trinity planitgreen sustainability project – one of a number of environmentally responsible projects being undertaken progressively by the College.
