Trinity pays respect to Marika family
Tuesday 13 May 2008
Members of Trinity College pay their respects to all members of the Marika family upon hearing of the sudden passing of Dr R Marika, aged 49, while hunting in the stringybark forests of her country at Yirrkala, in the Northern Territory.
A close relative of Rärriwuy Marika, who visited Trinity last year and again recently, Dr Marika was one of Australia’s most prominent traditional Aboriginal leaders working for reconciliation. She wrote and presented numerous publications and papers both nationally and internationally, and stayed at Trinity in January this year while attending the Council for International History of Art Conference at the University of Melbourne.
