Student hostels

The College works with a number of student hostels that provide accommodation for international students. Hostel rooms are furnished and are usually within walking distance, or a short tram ride, of the College.

In hostels, students usually have their own room but share a bathroom, kitchen and living spaces with other residents. Costs for electricity gas and water are included in the student’s rent.

Most hostels provide meals so cooking skills are not needed. Facilities vary from hostel to hostel. Places are limited so early application is advisable.

NOTE: Students are usually required to commit to at least six months of accommodation at the hostel, and will be required to remain and pay for the period that is stated in their accommodation contract. However, rent is usually paid monthly. The table below lists some of the options available.

Student apartments

Students live in fully self-contained apartments with their own kitchens and bathrooms. Most are located within walking distance, or a short tram ride, of the College. Apartments are generally leased under 12-month agreements and typically, rent payments are due monthly. There are additional costs for electricity, gas and telephone use.

NOTE: Students usually need to commit to staying in their accommodation for at least six or 12 months under the lease agreement. If they vacate before the end of the lease period, they may still need to continue paying the rent for the duration of the original contract.

Private Rental

The option of private rental accommodation provides students with greater independence but also the responsibility of cooking. Some choose to share a house or flat with other Foundation Studies students. They must ensure they can live comfortably with the others and agree on house rules. Private rental arrangements are not an option for students under the age of 18.

This type of accommodation is generally unfurnished, and students need to allow some time before their course starts to find suitable accommodation and set themselves up. They also need to have funds to purchase furniture and equipment.

Students may require temporary accommodation when they first arrive in Melbourne, while they are looking for a suitable place. The TCFS Accommodation Office can assist with arranging temporary accommodation.

Australian real estate agents generally require one month’s rent in advance plus a refundable security deposit (bond), typically equivalent to a month’s rent.

Each student is responsible for their agreed share of the rent for the entire period of their lease, which is normally 12 months. If they vacate before the end of the lease period, they may still need to continue paying the rent for the duration of the original contract. The costs of electricity, gas and telephone are additional.
