In the July 2012 school holidays, Trinity College presents the third annual Juilliard Winter Jazz School at Trinity.

The renowned Juilliard School in New York City, sends its top jazz teachers to work with dedicated, devoted and passionate young jazz musicians in Melbourne. You will find that your performance skills are transformed – some of our students say it is like having six months' worth of practice in one week!

Learn from some of the world's greatest jazz musicians and be surrounded by other young jazz enthusiasts from Australia and other parts of the world, just like you!

Who is the winter jazz school for?

The Juilliard Winter Jazz School at Trinity is open to Australian and international high school students aged 14–17 years. If you're proficient with one of the following instruments, we'd love to hear from you:

  • drums

  • bass (acoustic, electric or both)

  • piano

  • guitar

  • trumpet

  • trombone

  • saxophone and/or clarinet.

Program Requirements

To participate in the Juilliard Winter Jazz School, you need:

  • knowledge of at least three major and three minor scales
  • the ability to play over a blues in Bb, F, G minor or C minor (pick two keys)
  • basic reading of melodies and rhythms
  • to prepare a jazz piece audition (please select either Blue Bossa, C Jam Blues, Autumn Leaves, Stella by Starlight or Now's the Time).

Application Process

To apply for the Juilliard Winter Jazz School at Trinity please submit:

  • a completed Application Form 
  • a supporting statement from a teacher or administrator, confirming you meet program requirements
  • an audition recording of your chosen jazz piece from the list above in audio, mp3, .avi, .flv, .mov or .mpg format (audition can be solo, with a backing track or with live accompaniment).
