Objectives
This subject is designed to enable students to reach an advanced level of skill and mastery of a particular musical instrument and to give a broad understanding of performance music through participation in the instrument and concert classes. The subject provides individual practical lessons for students who have a background in learning a musical instrument. The individual practical lessons will include a study of selected repertoire on the student's instrument, principles of interpretation and style and technical work. Students may also be required to attend the instrument class and concert class of the Faculty of Music (once per month).
Students intending to take this subject must pass at a practical audition, either live or by cassette tape recording. Students should play works which show that they have reached Grade 6 practical in the Associated Board, Royal Schools of Music, or Trinity College exams, or Grade 6 (Grade 5 for singers) in the exams of the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB).
Assessment
20 minute practical examination at the end of the year, before a panel of two examiners. As a guide, students will need to reach a standard equivalent to AMEB Grade 7 standard (Grade 6 for singers) in order to pass the subject.
The Faculty of
Music will accept a pass in this subject in lieu of an entrance
audition at the University of Melbourne either to the Bachelor of Music
or the Diploma in Music (Practical).
