About the Dean, International Programs
Dr Barbara Cargill
BA, MEd Melb, DBA SUT, MAHRI
Dr Cargill joined the staff of Trinity College in November 2006. Her International Programs portfolio embraces Trinity College Foundation Studies, as well as Trinity’s Summer Schools and some new programs for international students that are currently being developed.
She was previously a Professorial Fellow in the Faculty of Business & Enterprise at Swinburne University of Technology where, over a 21-year period, she filled many roles, including Head of School, Dean of Business and Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor. She thus brings wide-ranging experience of higher education management to Trinity.
Before moving into academe, Dr Cargill had a career as a counsellor, organisational psychologist, and a consultant in organisational change and management. She has recently submitted a doctoral thesis for examination, making the sequencing of her academic career a somewhat unusual one.
Her teaching, consulting and research have combined her interest in eclectic theories of human resource management and organisation behaviour with a strong practitioner understanding of application and best practice, especially as it relates to strategic change and the leadership of it. She has done extensive work as an external and internal change agent, recently concentrating on culture change and leadership within the university sector. Her current research is into the leadership and creation of entrepreneurial processes and cultures within university environments. She is also actively involved in a community service role with a major Melbourne specialist teaching hospital.
Dr Cargill has published on various matters related to organisational change processes, and has also been involved in the development of a number of mixed-mode models which combine ‘soft’ more intuitive approaches with ‘harder’ more structured models, exploring more integrated ‘best practice’ solutions to complex organisational and management problems. Her thesis work has been about the organisational capabilities for successful university entrepreneurship.
