Chaplains of Trinity College
When
the first Chapel was dedicated in 1878, Bishop Moorhouse granted the
Principal (as the Warden was known until 1881) a special licence as Lay
Minister of the College Chapel. A College Chaplain was first appointed in
1883 due to the need to supervise the numbers of
theological students then in residence (the Trinity
College Theological School had been established in 1878). Canon Handfield was,
however, primarily in charge of the parish of St Peter's, Eastern Hill,
and had little time for his College duties, which were more usually
undertaken by the Warden or one of the resident tutors.
