Resources and Support

Mentoring

Every Foundation Studies student will be paired with a staff member who will be their mentor for the duration of their course.

In collaboration with their mentor, students will develop a personalised wellbeing plan. Our evidence-based mentor program, based on the 'My Wellbeing Planner', emphasises the importance of developing wellbeing literacy (skills, knowledge and language about wellbeing). The skills learnt through this program are useful for life.

Community Portal and Assessment Reports

Parents and guardians can view their child's class attendance records and assessment reports on the Trinity College Community Portal. An attendance notice is issued when:

  • projected attendance is 90 per cent or below (the first notice is issued at 95 per cent attendance for students repeating or returning from suspension of studies)
  • projected attendance is 85 per cent or below, at which point a final notice is issued.

A copy of the notice is sent to the student's parents, education agent and mentor.

Login details will be sent to parents a few weeks after the program commences.

24-hour Support

TCFS offers the Trinity Helpline – an 'out of hours' telephone line for students experiencing a problem outside business hours or during the weekends and holidays. Students who phone the Trinity Helpline will talk to a trained Trinity staff member. Students who are experiencing a medical emergency should telephone 000 for fire, ambulance or police services and should also contact their health insurance helpline.

Student Health

TCFS students can access the University of Melbourne health service, which provides a student-friendly environment and excellent medical services close to the Trinity College campus. Trinity College also has a full-time nurse who is available to students via a drop-in service, or by phone and email. The College nurse provides confidential assessment and treatment for injuries, health literacy education and referral to external medical practitioners. The nurse also assists students with OSHC insurance claims by liaising with OSHC providers.

Melbourne has medical, dental and physiotherapy clinics, as well as other health service providers, all over the city. The Trinity College nurse supports students to access the health care they need and helps students feel empowered to understand and navigate the Australian medical system.

The Department of Home Affairs (HA) requires international students to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their visa, prior to applying for a student visa.

Trinity College's preferred OSHC provider is Bupa, as Bupa provides the most comprehensive student health insurance cover for our students. Of the five top OSHC insurance providers in Australia, only Bupa pays 100 per cent of MBS (Medicare Benefit Scheme) for pathology, X-ray, and specialist outpatient and inpatient costs. Other providers only offer 85 per cent of the MBS fee and some do not cover inpatient costs in these areas. Bupa offers a 24-hour support service to our students (home and property assistance, medical and accident assistance and general tax and legal enquiries) in more than 180 languages.

Bupa has a representative at the University of Melbourne's Stop 1 centre, which offers a range of student support services and is walking distance from the Trinity campus. The Bupa representative works closely with the College nurse and is available to assist our students with queries and claims from 9am–5pm, Monday to Friday. Bupa also has a number of retail stores in the CBD and across Melbourne, which are open on weekends and can be called or visited by students.

Please do not pre-register for OSHC policy before a student's arrival in Australia or choose a password for the student. Students will be shown how to register online for the policy during the Trinity orientation.

Email Addresses used for OSHC

Agents should use the student's personal email address (not Trinity College email account) when securing an OSHC policy. This lets the student easily register their account on arrival, update their contact details and manage their own account.

Clubs and Activities

Foundation Studies students at Trinity College are offered a range of extracurricular activities as part of the Trinity Lifeskills Club, which aims to enrich their experience while living and studying in Melbourne. Besides having fun outside their studies, students participating in club activities get to learn new skills and make friends.

Many of the clubs run at Trinity College are initiated and facilitated by staff members and student leaders. Our clubs cover many areas of interest, including culture, music, sport, entertainment, environment, spirituality and education.

Counselling

The TCFS counselling team is made up of trained professionals who provide free, confidential counselling services to students who wish to discuss any issues that may be impacting their lives. Students can get support to help them deal with problems in everyday life as well as academic, personal or emotional issues.

Students can request counselling via email and a counsellor will reply and organise a face-to-face meeting with the student.

Chaplaincy

We know that our students' long-term success in their studies and employability is enhanced by meaningful connections to community and local networks, so the Pathways School Chaplain provides a range of cultural inclusion services for Trinity College students, alumni and families. Our Chaplain is a teacher and peacebuilding educator who offers a range of leadership development and intercultural programs on campus, including our Peace and Leadership Internship. Chaplaincy also provides opportunities to connect with local faith communities and youth events.

Advancement

The aim of the Advancement Office is to help students connect with Trinity College's global network, develop work-ready skills and explore career-defining opportunities. The office provides career planning advice, one-on-one career counselling, job search strategies, tailored workshops and networking events, mentoring and employment opportunities and resume checks.
