Trinity Tutorials
The College offers an opportunity for tutors and students to work together in small classes. As tutors are not tied to the demands of the formal syllabus and do not have to grade their students’ work, College tutorials provide a space in which tutors can encourage students to explore general educational philosophy, essential research skills and specialist knowledge. Tutors hold regular one-hour tutorial classes in their subjects. Typically, the College organises tutorials for groups of four or more students, but will consider smaller tutorial classes on a case-by-case basis. The College aims to provide tutorial support for all of its students’ first-year and second-year subjects, and to ensure coverage of the core of later year work in major disciplines, with particular emphasis in those areas in which students indicate a need for tutorial assistance. The timetable is displayed in the vestibule near the Dining Hall door, and on the portal.
Tutorials are compulsory for first-year students. If you are unable to attend, you should email your tutor in advance and make an apology. Tutors can also be consulted informally, by negotiation, when you encounter a problem in your studies. Tutors report to the Head of Academic Programs on students’ attendance and progress.
Tutorials are held on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, which are regarded as teaching nights in the colleges. It is expected that these nights will be kept free of competing commitments, and other activities may not be organised during tutorial times. In the week before Easter, tutorial classes will be held on Monday and Tuesday, but not on Maundy Thursday, when most students will be leaving for the Easter break.
