Allen is a proud Yorta Yorta man from Mooroopna on the Murray River in Victoria. He is one of eight children, and the only one to have completed secondary school.
Although he was doing well in school and was keen to continue his education, Allen expected financial reasons would require him to leave school at the end of Year 10 and start earning a living. One of his teachers urged him to apply for a place in Trinity’s Young Leaders Summer School; he was awarded a scholarship and joined the December 2007 program.
Trinity’s Summer School was a turning point for Allen. He discovered he had options that meant he could finish Year 12. He was awarded a scholarship to attend Trinity Grammar School in Kew where he completed his secondary studies.
Allen is now a second year resident student at Trinity College having completed the foundation year of the BA (Extended) in 2010 with outstanding results. He is determined to complete his degree and return home as living proof of the benefits of embracing opportunities and working hard. He wishes to inspire other Indigenous students to follow a similar path.
‘Trinity doesn’t teach you how to look good in moments of comfort; it teaches you how to keep your composure in challenging times, allowing you to gain the most from yourself.’
